Managed SOC, MDR and XDR: SOC as a service in Australia

Detecting an attack is only half the job; someone has to investigate it and respond. TOM SHAW delivers SOC as a service for organisations across Australia: a managed SOC, managed detection and response with Vectra MXDR, and XDR across your environment.

What is SOC as a service, or a managed SOC?

A security operations centre (SOC) is the people, process and technology that watch for threats and respond to them. SOC as a service, often called a managed SOC, is that capability delivered by a provider instead of built, staffed and run in-house. Managed detection and response (MDR) is the detection, investigation and response part of that work delivered as a service; TOM SHAW delivers it with Vectra MXDR, the managed extended detection and response service from Vectra AI. Extended detection and response (XDR) is the technology that brings detection and response together across endpoints, identities, cloud and network, so an attack can be followed from one stage to the next. A SIEM adds the wider log sources and keeps records for investigations. Together they let an organisation that cannot staff a full security operations centre find real attacks among the alert noise and act on them.

How TOM SHAW delivers Managed SOC, MDR and XDR

One Australian team from platform choice to day-to-day operation.

Scoping and onboarding

We map your environment, critical systems and existing security tools, agree scope and escalation paths with you, and connect the data sources the managed SOC needs.

XDR and SIEM deployment

We implement XDR across endpoint, identity, cloud and network, and SIEM where wider log coverage is needed, using platforms from our security partners.

Managed detection and response

MDR is delivered with Vectra MXDR: Vectra analysts monitor, investigate and help contain attacks across identity, public cloud, SaaS and network, fully managed or co-managed with your team.

Detection and triage

We monitor for threats, separate real attacks from false positives, and cut through alert noise so your team sees what matters.

Investigation and threat hunting

Suspicious activity is investigated to establish what happened and how far it reached, and threats that have not raised an alert are hunted for.

Response and containment

When an attack is confirmed, we act to contain it within the response actions agreed with you, and work with your team on recovery.

Reporting and review

We walk your team through what was detected, what was done and what to fix next, in plain language your leadership can act on.

Continuous improvement

We feed what each incident teaches back into detections, playbooks and controls, so the same attack is harder next time.

Managed SOC, MDR and XDR: common questions

What is SOC as a service?

SOC as a service (SOCaaS) gives you the work of a security operations centre, including monitoring, alert triage, investigation and incident response, from an outside team rather than a SOC you build, staff and run yourself. TOM SHAW delivers SOC as a service to organisations across Australia, with managed detection and response from Vectra MXDR and XDR and SIEM platforms from our security partners.

What is a managed SOC?

A managed SOC is a security operations centre run for you by a provider. The provider's analysts watch your security telemetry, decide which alerts are real, investigate them and lead the response, while your team keeps the business decisions. Managed SOC and SOC as a service usually describe the same thing.

How is a managed SOC different from an in-house SOC?

An in-house SOC means hiring and keeping analysts, buying and tuning the tools, writing detections and covering after-hours rosters yourself. A managed SOC shares that work with a provider that already has the people, process and platforms, so you can start sooner and extend coverage without building a whole team. Many organisations run a hybrid model: an internal team owns the environment and the provider adds detection, investigation and response capacity.

What is included in SOC as a service?

Typically: collecting security telemetry from endpoints, identities, cloud, SaaS and network; detection and alert triage; investigation of suspicious activity; threat hunting; incident response and containment; and reporting on what was found and fixed. Exactly what TOM SHAW covers depends on your environment and the platforms in place, and we agree the scope with you before onboarding.

How does onboarding to a managed SOC work?

We start by understanding your environment, the systems that matter most and the tools you already run. We then connect data sources, deploy or integrate XDR and SIEM where needed, tune detections to reduce noise, and agree how escalation and response work with your team, including who we contact and what we may contain on your behalf. Monitoring then begins, and detections keep improving as we learn your environment.

How do I choose a SOC as a service provider in Australia?

Check what the provider actually covers (endpoint, identity, cloud, SaaS and network), whether they only alert you or also contain threats, how they work with your existing tools and team, where your data is processed and stored, how escalation works, and what you will see in reporting. Ask for these answers in writing and make sure the contract matches the conversation.

What is Vectra MDR?

Vectra AI offers managed detection and response services: Vectra MDR and its extended version, Vectra MXDR. Vectra analysts monitor, investigate and respond to attacks across identity, public cloud, SaaS and data centre networks, hunt for threats that have not been detected, and can contain threats with remote response actions. TOM SHAW delivers managed detection and response in Australia with Vectra MXDR.

Is Vectra MXDR fully managed or co-managed?

Either. Vectra offers MXDR fully managed or co-managed with your SOC, depending on the maturity of your security team, and the service can scale as your needs change.

Does Vectra MXDR work with my existing EDR?

Vectra lists integrations with a range of endpoint (EDR) platforms, including SentinelOne, and with firewall and network tools for response. We check how it fits your stack during scoping.

What is the difference between MDR and XDR?

XDR is technology that brings detection and response together across endpoints, identity, cloud and network. MDR is a service in which a security team uses tools like XDR to detect, investigate and respond to threats on your behalf.

Where does SIEM fit in a managed SOC?

A SIEM collects and correlates logs from across your environment so they can be searched, alerted on and kept for investigations. In a managed SOC it often sits alongside XDR: XDR follows attacks across endpoints, identity, cloud and network, while the SIEM brings in the wider log sources. TOM SHAW also delivers SIEM on its own.

Do I need my own SOC?

Not necessarily. Many organisations get security operations as a managed service instead of building and staffing their own SOC. TOM SHAW can deliver it as a service or support the team you already have.

Which platforms do you use?

Managed detection and response is delivered with Vectra MXDR from Vectra AI. For XDR and SIEM we use platforms from our security partners, including SentinelOne and Vectra AI, and help you choose the right combination for your environment.

Do you work with organisations across Australia?

Yes. TOM SHAW delivers SOC as a service, managed detection and response and XDR to organisations across Australia.
