Akamai protects websites, applications and APIs at the edge, with DDoS defence, bot controls and microsegmentation. TOM SHAW is an authorised Akamai partner that supplies, implements, integrates and supports Akamai across Australia.

Application, API and zero trust security

What Akamai does

Akamai protects websites, applications and APIs from attack and abuse, using its globally distributed edge network to stop threats before they reach your infrastructure. Its security portfolio also covers DDoS defence, bot and account abuse, and zero trust controls inside the organisation such as microsegmentation and identity-based application access.

  • Web application firewall and API protection delivered at the edge
  • Discovery, posture assessment, runtime monitoring and testing of APIs
  • DDoS defence for applications and for whole network infrastructure
  • Bot, scraper and account-takeover protection for customer-facing sites
  • Microsegmentation to contain lateral movement and ransomware spread
  • Identity- and context-based access to private applications instead of VPNs

Akamai products we supply and implement

App & API Protector

Edge-delivered web application and API protection combining a self-tuning WAF, application-layer DDoS defence, bot controls and API discovery in one product.

API Security

Finds APIs across traffic, code and infrastructure, including undocumented ones, assesses their posture, watches runtime behaviour for abuse and runs security tests in CI/CD.

Akamai Guardicore Segmentation

Software-based microsegmentation for data centre, cloud and hybrid environments that maps traffic flows and enforces policy to limit how far an attacker can move.

Enterprise Application Access

Zero trust network access that grants users entry to specific applications based on identity and context, rather than placing them on the network.

Prolexic

DDoS protection for data centres and network infrastructure, filtering attack traffic before it reaches the organisation's own links.

Bot Manager

Detects and manages automated traffic, blocking harmful bots while allowing legitimate ones such as search engine crawlers.

What Akamai helps with

Protecting public web applications

App & API Protector inspects traffic at the edge for injection, cross-site scripting and application-layer DDoS, so attacks are stopped before they reach your servers.

Getting control of API sprawl

API Security inventories the APIs you actually run, including shadow and forgotten ones, highlights sensitive data exposure and flags abuse of business logic.

Containing ransomware and lateral movement

Guardicore Segmentation lets you define which workloads may talk to each other, so a compromised server cannot freely reach the rest of the environment.

Replacing VPN access for staff and contractors

Enterprise Application Access gives users access only to the applications they need, checked against identity and device context, without exposing the wider network.

Akamai in Australia: common questions

What is Akamai?

Akamai runs a globally distributed edge network and builds security on it. Its portfolio protects websites, applications and APIs from attack and abuse, and covers DDoS defence, bot management and zero trust controls such as microsegmentation and identity-based application access.

What is Akamai App & API Protector?

App & API Protector is Akamai's web application and API protection product, delivered from the edge. It combines a web application firewall, application-layer DDoS protection, bot controls and API discovery, with a hybrid option for on-premises and multi-CDN environments.

Does Akamai offer DDoS protection?

Yes. App & API Protector includes application-layer DDoS defence, and Prolexic protects data centres and network infrastructure against large volumetric DDoS attacks.

What is Akamai Guardicore Segmentation?

It is Akamai's microsegmentation product. It shows traffic between workloads across on-premises and cloud environments and enforces policy, so attackers and ransomware cannot move freely once inside.

What is the difference between Akamai App & API Protector and Akamai API Security?

App & API Protector enforces protection inline at the edge, including WAF and DDoS defence. API Security focuses on discovering APIs, assessing their posture, analysing runtime behaviour for abuse and testing APIs before release; Akamai positions the two as complementary.

Is Akamai a CDN?

Yes. Akamai runs a content delivery network: geographically distributed edge servers hold cached copies of content and serve users from a nearby location, which shortens load times. Its delivery products include Ion for application performance, and Adaptive Media Delivery and Download Delivery for media. Akamai's security products, such as App & API Protector, are also delivered from its edge.

What is Akamai WAF?

Akamai's web application firewall is part of App & API Protector. It runs at the Akamai edge and guards against threats such as the OWASP Top 10 and known CVEs. Teams can manage it through a web interface, Terraform, APIs or the Akamai CLI, including within a CI/CD pipeline.

How does Akamai Prolexic work?

Prolexic routes incoming traffic through Akamai's scrubbing centres, which inspect it, separate attack traffic from valid traffic and forward only the clean traffic to your systems. It can run always-on, with all inbound traffic routed through it, or on demand, with traffic routed through it during an attack. Akamai also offers on-premises and hybrid options.

How does Akamai Bot Manager detect bots?

Bot Manager uses AI models for user behaviour analysis, browser fingerprinting and other signals to score traffic from 0 (human) to 100 (bot). You set the thresholds that decide whether to watch, challenge or mitigate, and can create categories for useful bots so they get through. Its insights can be sent to SIEM tools.

Can Akamai Enterprise Application Access replace a VPN?

It can. Enterprise Application Access is Akamai's zero trust network access service: it grants identity-based access to specific private applications rather than the whole network, without a client for web applications and with a client for others. A connector deployed where the applications live makes an outbound connection, so no inbound firewall access is needed. It works with identity providers including Okta, Ping, Google and Microsoft Azure AD.

Can Akamai Guardicore Segmentation protect legacy and OT systems?

Yes. Akamai recommends agents for the most visibility and control, and offers agentless enforcement for legacy and OT assets that cannot run host-based security software. You can simulate a policy's impact before enforcing it.
